Thanks for the emails. I got rid of them.

I'm hardly here since there's virtually no activity.

At least I came on today. I had report a bunch of explicit posts. So that's one upside to less activity, less people having their eyes contaminated by those posts.

Epicurean Hermit
Greetings, and welcome to the Epicurean Hermit! The ORIGINAL land hermit crab food site.
You must have joined us because you're interested in the best and widest diet to feed your crabs. To get you started, there is a comprehensive food list of hermit safe human-grade foods on this site. I recommend you buy organic, for your crabs' health.

The food list is long, but there are always new foods being added, so check back in the Articles section frequently.
This site is for diet and nutrition. If you wish to email me to answer any questions for you, please keep this in mind. I do not answer general crabbing questions. If you have a question about your crabs not related to diet or nutrition please visit EH's General board

You don't necessarily need to do recipes for the crabs. However, here are some things that have been hits with my crabs:

Lime Shrimp:
Saute fresh shrimp (you don't even need to peel them!) in some olive oil. When they're cooked, remove from heat and squeeze a fresh lime's juice on them. Tear out some of the lime's flesh and mix it in.

I did a pound of these a good while back and still have a lot. I got 60/80 shrimp, I think (60-80 of them makes a pound, so yeah...it's a lot of shrimp).

Orange Honey Chicken:
You can use even the pieces of part fat/part chicken you cut off of your own chicken (I save the pieces from my family's boneless skinless chicken breasts) and drizzle honey over them on a saucer. I used the flesh of a dehydrated orange slice and put it on top, mixing it a bit to get the honey on it too. I microwaved until the chicken was cooked and froze it in single servings.

Lime Coconut Chicken:
Use same pieces of chicken as before, pour a little lime juice over it (we have a bottle we use for marinating meats, so I just poured a puddle around the chicken) and sprinkle with dried coconut (mine was from the addiction store). Microwave until cooked. This one smelled FANTASTIC. You could probably just use some fresh coconut shavings or even coconut oil for the same basic product.

Crabby Scrambled Eggs:
Beat one egg in a bowl; sprinkle with a crab-safe salt (I used Himalayan Rock Salt). Add some spirulina powder and mix it in (will turn greenish). Break the eggshell up into little pieces and mix it in. Put the bowl in the microwave and microwave on high for around a minute - it may be done before that, so watch it. You can add all sorts of other dried goodies to this recipe - next time, I'm making it into an omelet - I'll add dried baby river shrimp, maybe some dried silversides, or krill. I'll add peppers, tomato, maybe even some squash and spinach. It sounds yummy to me (minus the shrimp/silversides/krill) now!

Note: Most of these recipes are not complete nutrition for crabs. I use the fresh bowl to supplement the dry bowl that's full of a combination of Addiction store foods and stuff I dry myself.

My crabs love scrambled eggs! I cheat, though. I use San Francisco Bay's Veggie cups. I usually use 1/2 of one of those and add in some protein. They love it and I don't have to do a lot of work! Wink

They also love oatmeal made with coconut milk and honey. I make it when I crack a coconut. I drop little balls of it onto a cookie sheet, then put the cookie sheet into the freezer until they're frozen, and then I put them into a ziploc freezer baggie so they're easy to store and serve.

I'm definitely going to try some of those chicken recipes the next time we have chicken. They sound yummy enough to eat!!

Here are some dishes that don't cover all the food groups crabs need, but they're very easy for a side dish or something...

1. My crabs love carrot and honey together. I use a cheese grater, grate up a carrot. Mix up the carrot mush with cuttlebone and honey, put it in a little shell and serve it to my crabbies.

2. I once boiled (well, my mom did it but you get the point) some assorted beans, lentils, wild rice ans regular rice. Then I put them on a cookie sheet in little balls and it the freezer to freeze. Then, you can put the little balls in a ziplock for easy serving.

3. A crabby omelet.

I also recommend the recipe book, it has lots of good stuff.

one of my crabs favs is a rose petal salad.
you need:
red rose petals
pink rose petals
calendula petals
and organic honey

you put all the petals in a bag with some honey and shake to coat the flowers.  When you serve it you can put some boost powder on top.
I get all my ingredients for Hermit Crab Addiction (www.hermitcrabaddictionstore.com)
